Developed by ACE Resource Network and American Society for the Positive Care of Children (American SPCC), this toolkit for parents and caregivers of babies and young children is unique in its framework around the lasting impacts our own childhood experiences may have on us. “We All Have a Number Story: Your Child’s First Chapters” explores how our little ones may be affected by our own childhoods, how their early years count, and how we can help provide a strong start for our kids and families even through tough times and challenging situations.
Part One of this toolkit provides information on addressing and preventing Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), childhood adversity, and toxic stress. Part Two spans the development and positive parenting of babies and children ages 0 to 5, during the most critical stages of early development.
From the Executive Summary: “This report highlights the exciting work happening across California to recognize and respond to ACEs and toxic stress as a public health crisis. It also serves as a roadmap for other states or nations to replicate and innovate from California’s experiences… While much work lies ahead, this California Surgeon General’s report on ACEs and toxic stress provides a framework for shared understanding, shared language, and a shared vision with which state and local leaders can align cross-sector efforts for prevention, early detection, and effective intervention.”
